"Vimto" (smudgey)

Hello oppo, I’ve been absent for a while so I figured I’d update.
First, life stuff. I forced myself to start seeing a therapist for depression, because it’s been a gradual slippery slope the past few months. It’s early days yet but I’m hoping I’ll get better.
Some may recall that I have numerous back problems, including a degenerative disc disease, which leads into my next point. Last I posted, I had my 2013 Mustang and my newly acquired Fiesta SFE. While the Fiesta was much fun to drive it killed my back and had electrical problems. Deeply upside down financially in it, I was forced to sell both.
Thanks to $6000 in manufacturer incentives I was able to get into a 2018 Hyundai Sonata SEL. Yes, I know, I can’t keep a car worth shit.
The Sonata is very comfy, averages 34 mpg (40+ on long hauls), and has lots of creature comforts, like an app for remote start. It’s certainly not the enthusiast choice, but I like it.

Not trying to be a jerk, so please don’t take this the wrong way, just genuinely curious!
If you were upside down financially and had to sell both cars, why did you buy a brand new 2018 rather than a reliable used car that still had plenty of warra
nty left and would’ve been vastly cheaper
?
Glad you’re seeing a therapist for help though....I’ve had a friend or two in the same boat you’re in and it helped them put things into perspective and pick themselves back up. :)

I was an idiot paying almost $900/mo for both car payments + insurance, and because the fiesta was so upside down I couldn’t sell it privately or trade it on a used car, no bank would finance a non-new car with that kind of negative equity.

Good choice. It seems all of my friends who are either big or have back problems drive a Sonata. Seems it’s just a good, solid, comfortable vehicle.
Here's to recovery. Keep at it!

Glad you’re seeing a professional and hope they can get you on the mend.
Any reason why you went to a much larger car?

Just glad it’s all sorted out and the Sonata is at least feasible....I still find it mind boggling they won’t finance a used cheaper car, but will finance something new....have to make their money somehow I guess!

Honestly most of the reason I went with the Sonata is because its one of the most heavily incentivized cars on the market right now.

The reason is because they want the car to last the length of the loan, and be worth something. If you financed a car worth $9k with $6k of negative equity you’d owe $15k on it, say if you stopped paying on it or it broke down after 2 years the bank would never get their money back.

I’m tiny (5'7, <
130 lbs) but it is very comfortable. The quality is vastly improved vs. prior generations too.

Oh absolutely. I drove the family 2010 Elantra for years and it felt above average inside, and lightyears ahead of my friend's 2006. Another friend has a 2017 Sonata and it felt luxurious.
